What is a poem?

An article by Jerry Craven in a past issue of Writer’s Digest, confronts the issue of what a poem is and how to write one. The notion is generally widespread that if we knew what distinguishes poetry from prose, we all would be able to write a poem.

And recieve my jollies

In reality, however, there are fewer so-called masters of poetry in our cultural heritage than there are of other artists. Of modern big names, most of us merely know the names of Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, and a survey showed that lots of people have never heard of Robert Penn Warren. A great percentage of people when asked to name one female poet of rank, could come up with Emily Dickinson and no one else, and she lived more than hundred years ago.

The History Channel

To Nita's way of thinking, things had been going pretty good lately. Darrell came home after work and watched TV of late. He didn't stop off at the bar, anymore, he just sat in the living room watching. History Channel had been having shows about the war between Russia and Germany. Nita was cooking in the kitchen. She could hear the rattle on TV; it went well with the sound of potatoes frying. She looked in the living room and saw a little black German tank rolling by a farmhouse. The house looked like the roof was made of grass or something. It was on fire. The sound went squeak-rattle. A guy with an English accent was telling the story about it. Darrell was drinking a beer. Throwing Tables Out the Window
